Talk about a great idea for a charity! I heard about this one on the California Report. Village Harvest operates right in Santa Clara. Volunteers pick fruit from people’s backyard fruit trees and give the fruit to local food banks. So many people have fruit trees that they never harvest. We get lots of phone calls at WildCare from people asking how to keep raccoons/opossums/skunks, etc. out of their yards, but they don’t want to take the time to pick up the fruit they let fall to the ground. But that’s another story. During the Calilfornia Report story, volunteers harvested 1,000 pounds of citrus (oranges, grapefruit, and tangerines) from one old couple’s backyard. Brilliant!
